We decided to sail rather than fly this year as it was a cheaper but equally exciting alternative. The crossing was perfect and we left from Hull in a heat wave and arrived in Rotterdam in thick fog! The journey down to the South of Germany was long but interesting as we drove over the huge Rhein and Mosel bridges and past the Hockenheim formula 1 racing track. The car theme continued with a trip to the brand new Porsche museum which was very impressive, followed by a trip into Stuttgart itself - the air conditioned shops proved to be a welcome break from the intense heat.
We started the exchange with the usual day in Europa Park and let ourselves be thrown upside down and inside out which is not bad after a 10 hour coach journey the day before - it was nice to get thoroughly soaked and be able to dry out before the next ride! On another day we climbed the highest cathedral tower in the world (really) in Ulm and were rewarded with an ice cream in an Italian ice parlour as long as we ordered in German! - this was followed by a quick look round the town and then a couple of hours of sliding and jumping in a nearby swimming complex.
The evening disco was fairly energetic and Frau Brandt and myself were grateful to the Swabian parents for bringing along lots of local gastronomic delights for us to savour, thereby giving us an excuse to sit down! The town council generously gave us all 2 tickets each to visit the fabulous outdoor swimming complex, conveniently situated next to the school! As school finishes early in Germany, there has been time to enjoy it.
Over the remainder of the trip the students enjoyed many different activities and experiences with their individual exchange families.
It has been a really enjoyable trip for everyone taking part and we hope that many of the present year 8 students will sign up for next year.
THE LETTERS HAVE JUST GONE OUT FOR NEXT YEAR. |
