On Saturday 7 March 2009 a group of students (ten Year 8's and two Year 7's) went to the University of Leeds to take part in a Pop Maths Quiz. This was the first time Leeds had hosted such an event. As we arrived we had to find the Great Hall which was just as grand as its name suggests. The students split into two teams; on each team table there were drinks, pens and foam puzzles to do while we waited for other teams to arrive. Each team had to answer 20 questions that were read out with a 3 minute gap between each one.
Both teams worked really hard as the questions were a real challenge with Team 1 doing really well coming 4th out of 18 teams - well done to them.
After lunch in the student union refectory we went to a lecture theatre to hear a lecture about taking maths into the real world where we learnt about how prime numbers are used to encrypt personal details, the chance of answering all the questions right on ‘The Weakest Link' and about locomotion - how different creatures move. Thank you to all the parents who supported their children at this event and to the students themselves who all rose to the challenge tremendously.
