Brayton Beat Streetz (Brayton College's Samba Ensemble) participated in the Selby Culture Carnival organised by Selby Arts Council, on Saturday 9th May. The ensemble consists of Steven Powell, Hannah Cox, Hannah Creighton, Rachel Dunn, James Spencer and Zach Smith (all Y11), Ben Oldroyd (Y10), Andy Powell, Freddie Smith (both Y9), Oliver Hunt, James Hunt and Robert Shipley (all Y7) and Riley McDonagh of St Mary's Primary School (Y3).
The ensemble met at Selby Abbey Primary School along with 5 other local schools and marched in a Samba parade through the centre of Selby to Selby High School. The group were wearing T-shirts with the ensemble logo on the front and masks and hats that they had created in after school sessions with Mrs Walker.
On arrival at Selby High School the ensemble participated in a Samba contest against four other local schools. They performed four pieces which the group had composed with Brayton College drum teacher Darren Kenway. The judges commented on the complex rhythms, originality of the pieces and high energy playing. They were particularly impressed with the versatility of all of the students in swapping instruments for each piece and suggested that if the group could make the instrumental changes part of the performance they would be ‘awesome'.
After deliberation, Brayton Beat Streetz were thrilled that the judges awarded them first place. They received a certificate, samba drum and £100 voucher to spend on Samba equipment.
Brayton Beat Streetz meet on a Tuesday evening 3.30pm - 4.15pm in MU1 and are always looking for new members. Players do not need any drumming experience or need to read music. For further information see Mrs Elliott, Miss Summersall or Mr Kenway at the Music Office. Brayton Beat Streetz would particularly like to thank Mrs Walker (Subject Leader for Art) for all of her help and guidance in creating the masks and head wear, and all of the parents and students that were in the audience to support them on Saturday.
