The 2010 Brayton expedition to Northern France set off successfully in the early hours of Monday morning, as parents waved us off at 2.00am from the school car park. A mere 14 hours later, we stepped into glorious sunshine at the lovely Chateau Beamont. French motorways and services still shine by comparison with most experiences in the UK and the 37 student travellers had an excellent journey via the Eurotunnel with a couple of pleasant rests. Lots of naps seemed the order of the trip but one or two seemed to manage on just 5minutes sleep and talked for the other 13h 55min!! No names mentioned. We got on with speaking French right away, even if it was to buy expensive versions of 'familiar label' drinks in the shop!

Over two days, Year 7 students explored the landscape of the North York Moors looking at land use and it's formations, such as the Hole of Horcum (pictured top right) for their geography coursework.
Little did the students know that the trip would be a voyage of two halves. The first group had a wonderful day with sunny weather and blue skies. The same could not be said for the second group who endured a torrential downpour as a predicted light shower turned into a deluge! Despite the rain everybody enjoyed themselves, showed great spirit and were a credit to the college. |
Year 6 students joining us in September enjoyed a fun filled day at Brayton College, trying out some of the activities and lessons they have to look forward to in the autumn term.
They came on Thursday and Friday and completed 5 lessons like a normal school day. Period 1 was in the Drama Studio where they tried out their acting and miming skills with masks. Then they moved on to technology where the pupils made biscuits and even had some left over to take home! Third period was science where the students tried using Bunsen burners and making loud pops when testing for hydrogen.
After looking around school and playing games on the field during lunch, the pupils moved on to IT where they used digital cameras to produce profiles on themselves. The Final lesson was PE where the boys played tennis and the girls enjoyed athletics.
The behaviour and enthusiasm of all the Year 6 students was fantastic and we look forward to welcoming them all again in September. |

Over 90% of all year 11 students had individual careers interviews and of the 227 in the Year Group 94% have already accepted places for full time college courses, apprenticeships and jobs.
Well done to everybody involved in achieving high praise from the Careers service. We will have more detailed information on how our Year 11 students are doing by the end of September. |
The warm summer sunshine augured well for the day which began with a final formal assembly to celebrate the achievements of an excellent year group. This was followed by a well-earned reward breakfast to thank students for their hard work throughout the year. Formality over, the time all students had been eagerly awaiting for arrived - shirt signing. This annual ritual went as smoothly as ever with excited students mingling with staff and fellow students writing names and messages on each other's shirts and taking photographs capturing the last moments of their life at Brayton College.
This reminiscing continued throughout the morning and into the afternoon when the much anticipated Leavers' Assembly, organised by a small group of hard-working students led by Rachel Dunn, Alex Bentham, Ben Sumpner and Steven Powell, began. In this, students and staff showed off a wide range of talents in the sultry heat of the hall.
Congratulations and thank you to everyone who helped make this a very special day. It will be remembered for many years to come. |

In the last two weeks of the summer holidays (17 - 28 August 2009), we will be running a Summer School for children coming to us in September. The Summer School is designed to help your child get to know the school and some of the children who will be starting with them. They will be able to meet teachers and make friendships, which will give them a flying start in September.
There is an exciting programme, which includes workshops, day trips, and school based literacy, numeracy, technology and science activities. Children who attended last year enjoyed it very much.
There is no charge to attend Summer School, but we will not be providing transport to the college. Please make your own transport arrangements to bring the children to the college for 9:30am and pick them up at 3:15pm. Children will also need to bring a packed lunch and drink for break.
For further information please contact Mrs Hall on 01757 707731 |
Brayton College has received Local Authority recognition for the quality of teaching and learning. For three days, students and teachers at Brayton College have been filmed by a professional film crew, recording the quality teaching and learning at the college. The recording will be used to create a DVD showing the strategies for learning used at the college. Deputy Head teacher, Mike Roper said "We are passionate about what we do here at Brayton and the DVD will allow us to show everyone the quality of learning that takes place here." The students involved were all very nervous at the thought of working with the film crew but it all went according to plan. Year 9 students, Mark Silverwood and Joe Clements who were involved with the filming, said, "I was nervous about the filming to begin with but once it started my confidence grew," and "The teaching at Brayton College is great; I really like the idea of being able to show other people how we learn."
In addition, Brayton College has been invited by the local authority to become a lead school in North Yorkshire for teaching and learning. Mike Roper added "We are delighted that the local authority has recognised the outstanding work that has been going on in the college around teaching and learning. We look forward to supporting other schools locally and beyond in improving their strategies." |
On a sultry summer's evening around 175 students made their entrance at The Parsonage Hotel, Escrick in celebration of their five years at Brayton College.
Suits and bow ties colour co-ordinated shoes and hair, a classy kilt, frilly frocks long and short stilettos as high as sky scrapers - the students arrived in effervescent mood. The transport; another story, different modes from shiny stretched limos to expensive shiny sports cars, monster trucks, jeeps, motorcycles and even a speedboat, all aided to the annual congestion of the A19.
The students enjoyed their celebrations with non alcoholic punch, canapés and a rather large chocolate fountain with several dips.
The balmy evening provided the perfect opportunity for students to relax both inside the Crystal Room and also outside in the splendid gardens of the hotel.
Excitement and merriment was in abundance and both staff and students had a wonderful time - chilling, chatting and dancing the eve away
The Student Council played a large part in the preparation of The Ball, the food, drinks, room decorations, photographer and disco. A big thank you to all involved.
The next opportunity for students to meet on mass will be on Results day - August 27 th, at Brayton College.

City Square, Leeds was the place to be on Saturday morning as five of our teachers abseiled down the Deloittes building to raise money for Candlelighters, a charity who support Yorkshire families of children and teenagers who have been diagnosed with cancer or leukaemia. Chris Sands, John McAulay, Michelle Cartwright, Juvina Lee and Ellie Richards, donned helmets and harnesses, provided by the Royal Marines as friends and family gathered in the square to watch. The wary band were whisked to the top in a glass lift and after a quick brief from the experts, they were attached to a rope to begin the long descent. All of them made it down safely and al the staff and students at the college are very proud of what they have achieved. English teacher, Ellie Richards said "that was so good, I've never done anything like that before but I would like to do it again!"
